RIP Guru

I was a bit quick on the draw last time – but it looks like Guru has finally lost his long battle with cancer – a horrible start to the morning if that is true.

Gangstarr was one of the great hiphop acts of the nineties and it is a real shame to be losing a piece of that.

Apparently Guru died still angry at DJ Premier for some reason:

Deathbed Letter

Above is Guru’s deathbed letter to his fans and family.  Pretty sad stuff but to me the most glaring thing was:

“I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.”

Sad stuff right there – usually a deathbed letter is where you forgive :(.  I hope this “Solar” guy wasn’t poisoning Guru’s mind as he was ill.

I am only passing along rumours here but there are a lot of people who think Solar himself wrote that letter.  RIP to Guru, but I have to say the whole Solar- Guru dynamic is weird.

Anyways RIP to one of the greats:

  • According to Guru's family they never had the chance to see Guru and was prevented by Solar to see him. So I guess the letter is doubtful especially if there no other person to prove that Guru did gave that statement.
