Ron Artest is THAT dude

Ya know for a long time Mats Sundin was my favourite athlete – due mostly to his on ice performance. He had zero personality and then he went and personally broke my heart. So I adopted Shaq as my favorite athlete. He combined Hall of Fame play with a hilarious off court personality. As his career winds down I need to choose another athlete, I need to pass that crown.

Who do I choose? GSP? He is Canadian and is one of the best fighters in the world. LeBron? Well he is one of the best athletes around and may go down as one of the best basketball players ever.

But no. I choose neither of them.

I choose the man, the myth, the legend…Ron Artest!

This guy is just completely unique. A really out there individual. I know most people probably remember him for the ugly incident in Detroit where him going into the audience sparked a near riot. To be fair to him, it was an on court action by a Piston’s player that was the real trigger for the whole incident.

Either way – his hilarious/weird instances far out weigh his Detroit actions. He has a pretty bad reputation as a mental case but I think he is just weird and sometimes that doesn’t translate well through the media.

Take a look at some lesser known Ron Artest moments:

  • Ron Artest claims he saw a man get murdered on a basketball court: “It was so competitive, they broke a leg from a table and they threw it, it went right through his heart and he died right on the court. So I’m accustomed to playing basketball really rough.” I guess if this is true it is sad, but I have a feeling Ron is exagerrating a little bit on this one.
  • After being drafted and signed by the Chicago Bulls, Ron Artest applied or a second job at Circuit City so that he could get a discount on CDs. He used the Chicago Bulls owner as a reference.
  • On 2 occaisions with the Scaramento Kings, Ron Artest offered to donate his entire salary back to the team to keep Bonzi Wells and Rick Adleman.
  • Kobe Bryant claims that after the Lakers lost game six of the ‘08 NBA Finals in Boston by 39 points, he was alone in the shower, just fuming. He heard somebody walk in and assumed it was one of his teammates, or maybe a staff member. Instead, he looked up, and it was Ron Artest (to this day, Kobe has no idea how Artest got into the locker room).“I want to come help you,” Artest said. “If I can, I’m going to find a way to come to LA and give you the help you need to win a title.”
  • This year Ron Artest signed with the LA Lakers for a VERY fair 6 million per year. refreshing to see a player take less money to have a chance to win…and keep his word.
  • Ron Artest has recently recorded a Michael Jackson tribute track:

I could keep going…but I need to go to bed. Look for Ron Artest to win a NBA championship next year.
