The Power of Goals

I spent a lot of my youth without any concrete goals. I had a broad idea of what I wanted to do and what I wanted to accomplish but I didn’t really realize the power of goals.

“The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.”
-Jim Rohn-

I think that is why I didn’t have many break through successes early on. Thankfully my good friend Justin introduced me to the power of setting goals. Of course you need your big dreams and I tell everyone I know – dream huge. I know a lot of people think you need to set reasonable goals. I think that is bull. Every important medical breakthrough, invention, sports record and other big accomplishments were born out of a completely unreasonable goal.

“To dream anything that you want to dream. That’s the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the courage to succeed.”
-Bernard Edmonds-

That said, while you always aim towards these “unreasonable” goals you need to set other goals that will help direct you towards your ultimate dreams. I have obviously been working on dedicating myself to physical fitness. In my case – a big goal. I need to chart the path towards that big goal with smaller goals I can succeed at and feed on the positive energy of accomplishing them.

I remember that one night we were having some cocktails and I told my friend Jonny (now of Jonny and Laura) that my goal was to bench press 200+ pounds by August. Well today is June 25th and today I can say I reached my goal more than a month early. I did one complete, unaided bench press of 205 lbs this morning.

Not a huge weight by any means but my personal best and a goal reached. The power of goals.

“The thrill, believe me, is as much in the battle as in the victory.”
-David Sarnoff-
